Pacific Palisades, California AA Meetings
Pacific Palisades is tucked between the mountains and the coast on the west side of Los Angeles. You’ll find a steady weekly schedule of AA meetings here, with a mix of formats.
Most nights of the week, you’re no more than a short drive from a meeting. And if you’d like more options, Los Angeles offers more meetings close by.
This variety is nice for residents of a town built around canyon roads and the Pacific Coast Highway. You might choose a meeting a few minutes from home on a weeknight but broaden your range for meetings on the weekend.
What Are AA Meetings Like?
AA meetings in Pacific Palisades are either open or closed. Open meetings welcome anyone who wants to check out AA. Closed meetings are for those who want to stop drinking.
Within these two categories, AA meetings have a few formats. Discussion meetings involve talking about a specific topic. Speaker meetings allow one person to tell their story. Step studies work through the 12 steps in order over several weeks.
Regardless of the format, nothing is expected of newcomers. No one is ever forced to speak, and there are no fees or registration forms. You can simply sit back and listen, which is exactly what many people do at their first meeting.
Getting to AA Meetings from the Palisades
Day to day, most people get around Pacific Palisades by car, and it’s the same for getting to AA meetings. The meeting schedule here includes a variety of days and times to suit most needs. But if you’d like more options, Los Angeles hosts even more meetings, and you may be able to find a late night option or different format that’s not available in Pacific Palisades.
Online meetings are also available. These are a great option if transportation is an issue or if there are no in person meetings when you need one.
If AA Isn’t the Right Fit
AA isn’t your only option for peer support. SMART Recovery takes a secular, skills-based approach. Celebrate Recovery takes a more spiritual approach.
Most programs are coming at the same goal of stopping drinking from different angles. Working the 12 steps is central to AA, but not all programs follow these steps. It’s worth reading a bit about each one before choosing a group.
Your First Step
If you’re drinking heavily every day, stopping suddenly can cause medically serious withrawal symptoms. Your best first step is to contact a doctor to get clinical guidance for stopping safely.
Your peer group can complement this support, but it won’t provide medical care, so don’t skip this call.
