Types of AA Meetings
As Bill Sees It: As Bill Sees It is a collection of essays and reflections from AA’s founder, Bill W., about the organization and its purpose. The book is often referenced in AA meetings to encourage members to
individually and collectively discuss their recovery.
Big Book: In Massachusetts, clients in AA programs frequently discuss the Big Book. This collection of stories about women and men who overcame alcohol use disorder is used to inspire clients.
Daily Reflections: Daily Reflections is an AA text that compiles insight, experience, and encouragement from various members. Selected contents may be topics of discussions in AA meetings. Members can also adapt
reflections into their daily activities.
Discussion: In Massachusetts, AA discussion meetings are designed to give everyone the chance to share about a particular topic. Leaders will choose a central theme, usually based upon an AA text such as the Big Book. They’ll share first, then encourage members to offer their own insights and reflections.
Open: Open AA meetings in Massachusetts are available to anyone interested in the AA program of alcoholism recovery. Attendees will learn more about how AA works and what the 12 step model entails. Individuals seeking help for alcohol addiction can attend, as well as friends and loved ones who want to support their recovery journey.
Young People: AA meetings for young people are intended for members in early adulthood, usually in their late teens and twenties. These groups focus on the experiences and issues that young people may face in their
recovery.
