Types of AA Meetings

11th Step Meditation: 11th Step Meditation is a spiritual-based stage in which members individually and collectively pray for greater strength to correct weaknesses and to make amends for injuries inflicted on others due to alcohol use disorder.

Gay: Gay AA chapters can consist of members who are homosexual men or are simply gay-friendly. Topics in discussion are frequently related to issues facing gay men and their recovery.

Lesbian: Lesbian AA meetings are intended as safe spaces for homosexual women and their allies to meet. Discussions generally focus on issues and challenges that lesbians face in their recovery.

Literature: Literature-led AA meetings in North Carolina are support group meetings for people who are affected by alcoholism, including those suffering from alcohol addiction and those who have loved ones addicted to alcohol. Free for all to attend, these 12-step meetings study AA literature such as the Big Book of AA, AA workbooks, and other writings by AA founders and leaders.

Meditation: Meditation AA meetings feature physical and emotional calmness as a main method of healing. The meetings open with 15 minutes of private mediation and close with an additional 5 minutes of meditation.

Open: Open AA meetings in North Carolina allow anyone interested to attend. This helps attendees learn more about AA’s model of recovery and 12 step program model. Individuals seeking help for alcohol addiction are welcome to attend as well as anyone interested in supporting them on their journey.

Step Meeting: AA chapters use step meetings as part of the recovery process in North Carolina. In a step meeting, participants read from Twelve Steps and discuss how the passages relate to their own progress. These lessons can strengthen their resilience.

Transgender: Transgender AA meetings provide safe spaces for transgender individuals and their allies to meet. These groups may discuss issues and challenges related to alcohol use disorder that transgender individuals face.
