Open meetings are typical ‘speaker meetings’ where people tell their personal alcohol addiction stories. These discussions are typically based around a single topic that is selected by the leader of the meeting. Members then take turns weighing in on the topic. Some AA meetings have a particular objective such as ‘beginner meetings,’ where beginners are taught the basics of AA. At these meetings, prospective members receive one on one support or “sponsorship” from senior members.
