Types of AA Meetings

Closed: Closed AA meetings in Maine are not open to the general public. Only AA members and individuals who want to stop drinking are allowed to attend. Discussions center around alcohol addiction and recovery and anyone is welcome to share and contribute.

Literature: Maine literature-based AA meetings are peer group meetings for people who are impacted by alcohol addiction. Open to all to attend at no cost, these community support meetings emphasize AA literature, such as the Big Book of AA and other writings by AA founders and leaders within a 12-step recovery program.

Newcomer: In Maine, AA newcomer meetings are available for individuals seeking help for alcoholism. They are geared toward people who are new to the AA program and want to learn more about what it includes. The meetings may include an open discussion or follow a more structured format.

Step Meeting: Maine AA programs can include step meetings. In these meetings, participants compare their recovery experiences with each other and the corresponding stage in the 12 Step Program. Members then suggest ways to improve their progress for the next step.

Wheelchair-Accessible Bathroom: Selected AA centers offer wheelchair-accessible bathrooms for participants. These bathrooms have enough space for a wheelchair to safely navigate, and can include private stalls with guardrails, reachable toilet paper and seat cover dispensers, a wash basin, and other amenities.

Women: Women’s AA meetings in Maine are peer support meetings for women who are affected by alcohol addiction, including women with alcohol addiction and those who have loved ones who are addicted to alcohol. Held at various locations within the community, these meetings use a 12-step addiction recovery curriculum and are open to all women at no charge.
