Open meetings are typically ‘speaker meetings’ where members tell their alcohol addiction stories. At these meetings, members share their experience with anyone seeking help for an addiction to alcohol. AA meetings are usually centered on a specific topic that is chosen by the leader of the meeting. Members then take turns in contributing to the topic. Some AA meetings serve a particular purpose, like ‘beginners meetings’ where newcomers are taught about the fundamentals of the program. At ‘beginners meetings’ new members receive person-to-person service or “sponsorship” from senior members who have been sober for a long time.
