Expert Insights

According to a 2024 report by the Delaware Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health, of people accessing mental health treatment in the state, 13% are homeless, and of those accessing addiction treatment, 7% are homeless. Even more alarming, 67% of clients served by the state’s Opioid Response Grant in 2023 had faced housing instability throughout that year. Several programs currently address the homelessness problem in addicted and mentally ill populations. Grants from the Prescription Opioid Settlement Distribution Commission, and PATH (Projects for Assistance in Transition from Homelessness), allocate funds specifically for housing support. Apparently, more such appropriations are badly needed.

Popular Types of AA Meetings in Arizona

There are many different types of AA meetings taking place in Delaware. The most popular meetings are Open Meetings, Closed Meetings, 12-Step- Meetings and Big Book Study Meetings. But you may sometimes find “specialty” meetings such as gender specific meetings, LGBTQ+ meetings, Daily Reflections meetings or “As Bill Sees It” meetings.

Open Meetings

Open AA meetings welcome all who wish to attend, including not only people who are currently AA members, but also friends and family, as well as people who may be considering joining AA, or people who may just want to learn more about AA.

Closed Meetings

Closed AA meetings are open to AA members only. At closed meetings it’s often easier to develop friendships. Many AA members use a certain meeting as their “home group,” and attend meetings there regularly, so you’ll see them more consistently. Another advantage for closed meetings is greater opportunity for anonymity.

12-Step Meetings

During 12-Step Meetings, members learn to “work the steps” of the AA program. Typically, group members read each AA step, in order, from the book, Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions. Then members discuss what they read and share their personal experiences and insights. Mentors, or “sponsors”, will often assist newcomers as they work their steps.

Big Book Study Meetings

Big Book Study Meetings typically start with reading from the AA “Big Book,” Alcoholics Anonymous: The Story of How More Than One Hundred Men Have Recovered from Alcoholism. Then, members usually discuss passages, while also sharing their insights or personal experiences as they relate to the material.

Online AA Meetings in Delaware

Online AA meetings became widely used during the pandemic, because in-person meetings were unavailable. Today, online meetings are still thriving, and some have gained even more attendees. Many people like to supplement their in-person meetings with online meetings. This allows them to attend a meeting any time, day, or night. For others, socializing through an online presence just feels more comfortable than communicating in an in-person group setting. Many online meetings take place over a platform such as Zoom, Google Hangouts, or Go to Meeting. But AA online meetings can sometimes also be attended via chat rooms, discussion boards, or by telephone.
