Honolulu has a substantial AA community with an online presence almost as big as its in-person one. More than 45 in-person groups meet at more than 25 locations, with 90+ meetings every week to choose from. And another 20+ groups meet online, running more than 80 sessions a week. The online schedule is close to a full alternative rather than an afterthought. For an island city, this is very helpful.

You’ll find eight times more open meetings than closed ones. This means almost anything above will admit a first-time visitor or family member. Speaker meetings are unusually common in Honolulu. They are second only to discussion as the most common format. Literature meetings are well represented too.

Note that nine of the groups in our Honolulu listings are flagged as temporarily closed. This is a higher share than you’ll find in most cities. It’s best to confirm that a meeting is running before you make plans to attend, especially if you’re coming from another part of the island.

Your First AA Meeting in Honolulu

You don’t have to call yourself an alcoholic to attend an AA meeting in Honolulu. You also don’t need to register or pay anything. Simply arrive a few minutes early, grab a chair and lean in to listen. You don’t have to speak if you don’t want to.

Meetings are designated as either open or closed. Anyone is welcome at open meetings, including family members and people still determining whether they have a problem. Closed meetings are solely for people who want to stop drinking. Honolulu tends toward open meetings moreso than almost anywhere, so choosing your first meeting is mostly about time and location.

The AA Intergroup and 24-Hour Helpline

AA across Honolulu and the rest of O‘ahu is coordinated by the O‘ahu Intergroup of Hawai‘i. This organization runs a central office and a helpline open around the clock. Volunteers there can help you find a meeting or just listen.

When You Need More Than a Meeting

AA offers peer support, but it does not provide medical care. If you’ve been drinking heavily every day, stopping abruptly can be dangerous. This means it’s worth getting a medical opinion before you quit. Hawai‘i’s front door for substance use treatment is Hawai‘i CARES. This service is operated by the state Department of Health. It’s free, confidential and staffed around the clock. Hawwa’i CARES handles screening, assessment and placement rather than simply handing out a list of options.

It’s important to note that dialing 988 only routes to Hawai‘i CARES if you’re calling from an 808 number. If you’re calling from a mainland phone,  you should use the direct island number. Both numbers are listed under Resources, along with FindTreatment.gov.

How much do AA meetings in Honolulu cost to attend?

They’re free. AA groups are self-supporting through voluntary contributions, so a basket may be passed during the meeting, but no one is expected to give, least of all a newcomer.

Do I have to say I’m an alcoholic to attend a meeting?

No. AA states that the only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking, and you don’t even need that to sit in on an open meeting. Plenty of people attend for a while before deciding on next steps.
