Etowah, A census designated place in Henderson county, North Carolina, is a small suburban community with a rural township feeling. Even though it is a quiet and small town, residents still can be affected by unhealthy alcohol consumption that can affect their lives and of those that live around them. With this in mind, AA meetings in Etowah are set up to help people who struggle with alcohol use disorder and other drug abuses to share their experience, hope and strength. As is the case for many in the AA North Carolina system, there is no religion, creed or race restrictions for memberships, but the need and aspirations to live a happy and healthy life without alcohol. To help members through their recovery journey, meetings are set up with different methods and meeting systems. Meetings like that of new comer meetings that are also open for others, helps to motivate to speak their truth and ask for help. There also exists gender specific meetings, where only one gender is allowed, to make for a safe and shared experience space. Other meetings like that of traditions and step study meetings, where the former uses the 12 traditions of Alcoholics anonymous, while the latter simply focuses on a simple step and how to best approach it for working and applying the step to one’s life.
