Walnut Creek, California AA Meetings
Walnut Creek is a city in Contra Costa County, California. If you live or work in Contra Costa County and have an alcohol addiction, our online directory of AA meetings, Walnut Creek, CA, may help you find a local addiction recovery program. AA California meetings have a vibrant history. With the 1935 inception of Alcoholics Anonymous in Akron, Ohio, AA has since evolved. The organization started because the early founders were trying to find a way to be relieved from the compulsion to drink alcohol. The formal AA program was founded by Bill Wilson (referred to as “Bill W.” in AA’s primary text, “The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous”), and an Akron surgeon, Dr. Robert Smith (“Dr. Bob” in The Big Book).
Bill W. and Dr. Bob were originally involved in the Oxford Group fellowship, which encouraged employing spiritual values into one’s daily life. But the Oxford Group was not exclusively for people with alcohol addiction; the program was based on Christian principles (which didn’t work for Bill W. or Dr. Bob). But Bill W. was able to maintain sobriety with the help of a friend named Ebby T. Bill W. shared his new philosophy—that alcohol addiction is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit rather than a weakness in character. Shortly after the two early founders met, Dr. Bob was finally able to stop drinking. Bill W. implemented a spiritual set of principles, called the 12-Steps, into the new program, which spurred the beginning of the 12-Step recovery program known worldwide, today as Alcoholics Anonymous.
