If you are new to the Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) program, you may wonder about the difference between an AA group and an AA meeting. The short answer is that an AA meeting is a group of AA members gathered together at a specific time and place, usually weekly. Several AA meetings together are referred to as an “AA group.” But whenever an AA group exists, it must be open to anyone with a desire to quit drinking (regardless of the type of group). For example, an AA group for professional doctors or lawyers must allow non-medical AA members to attend their groups. If attendance is restricted—such as in a women’s or men’s group—the gathering must be called an “AA meeting” rather than an “AA group.” Many “old-timers” debate whether restricted meetings should be allowed in AA; this is because the Alcoholics Anonymous program was created to accommodate anyone who wants to stay sober regardless of gender, race, profession, or religious affiliation. But restricted meetings have been taking place for many years and are likely to continue. Understanding the terminology behind AA meetings and groups can help you find the AA group/meeting in Satellite Bay that is right for you.
