AA is considered a spiritual program, employing the 12-Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). AA members share their experience, strength, and hope with others, particularly newcomers. If you or a loved one is looking for help with substance use disorder, the AA sponsorship program may be of interest. A temporary sponsor is often suggested during a newcomer’s initial experience attending AA meetings. Later, as the beginner becomes more familiar with the other group members, a permanent sponsor (or sometimes even two sponsors) is often chosen. A sponsor serves to provide support and assist the newcomer in learning about and working the 12-Steps. The sponsorship process is the foundation of Alcoholics Anonymous; the early founders of the organization established it. If you or a loved one has alcohol addiction, contact a treatment specialist to learn more about available programs and recovery options.
