Salt Lake City, Utah AA Meetings

Salt Lake City has 42 in-person AA meetings at 27 locations around the city. These groups run roughly 85 meetings every week. Additionally, there are 23 online groups, offering roughly 63 sessions each week. Online groups make up a large portion of the local resources, which is closer to parity with in-person than in most cities.

The directory list on this page shows current schedules. You can filter the listing by day, time and format to find something that fits your daily schedule.

Salt Lake City is one of the most open AA communities in the area. Of the groups that identify a preference, open meetings outnumber closed meetings by roughly eight to one. This means that nearly all meetings in the area are available to a first-time visitor, if you are deciding whether you have a problem or to a family member who wants to understand the program.

Discussion and Big Book study are the most common formats that are available. The number of speaker and step meetings run close behind them. One practical caution: roughly 14 groups in the local listing are currently flagged as temporarily closed, which is roughly a fifth of the schedule. It’s best to confirm a meeting is available before you travel, either with the group or through the central office.

According to the CDC’s PLACES project (2025 release), an estimated 14.8% of Salt Lake City adults report binge drinking. Below is a snapshot of meeting types in our Salt Lake City directory that includes  in-person and online groups (as of July 2026):

  • Wheelchair-accessible: 20
  • Spanish-speaking: 5
  • Women’s: 4
  • Young people: 3
  • LGBTQ+: 2

The number of groups shifts as the meeting schedules are updated. Treat this list as a snapshot of the available meetings and the list above as the current source.

Your First AA Meeting in Salt Lake City

AA meetings do not require that you pay anything, call yourself an alcoholic, or register before or during the meeting. Your only requirements are to arrive a few minutes early, find a seat, and listen.

Meeting types are categorized as either open or closed. Open meetings welcome and support anyone. Closed meetings are for people who want to stop drinking. Because Salt Lake City has such a high number of open meetings, you are very likely to find a meeting that meets your needs.

At this time, there are no designated beginner meetings in Salt Lake City. However, an open discussion meeting is the practical first step. If you would rather have someone help you choose, the central office hotline is answered 24/7.

Our firsthand account of what happens at a first AA meeting walks through a typical hour, and our overview of the 12 Steps and 12 Traditions explains the ideas the program is built on.

Salt Lake City’s AA Central Office and 24-Hour Helpline

AA Central Office of Salt Lake serves the local AA meetings. This includes the greater Salt Lake area. Staffed by volunteers, the organization maintains the meeting schedules, sells literature and sobriety coins, and operates a 24/7 hotline.

The office is on West Louise Avenue and keeps weekday and Saturday hours. You’ll find the contact information listed under the Resources section. It publishes a printed meeting schedule that is updated regularly. They maintain a page of accessible meeting locations. This is worth using if you need to check a specific venue before a first visit.

The address, phone number and office hours are listed under the Resources section below.

Sober.com is an independent directory and is not affiliated with Alcoholics Anonymous World Services or the AA Central Office of Salt Lake.

Staying on Track Between Meetings

Many people pair meetings with the free Sober App. It tracks your sober days, what you have saved by not drinking, and milestones worth marking, which can be a good reminder of all your hard work on days between meetings.

If You Need More Help Than a Meeting

AA is peer support, not medical care. If you drink heavily every day, stopping suddenly can trigger dangerous side effects. For your safety, it is worth getting a medical opinion before you quit on your own.

Our guides to the alcohol withdrawal timeline and alcohol detox cover what withdrawal involves and when supervised care makes sense.

When you are seeking local treatment, Salt Lake County is the designated mental health authority for the county. The Division of Behavioral Health Services arranges substance use treatment through contracted providers.

Treatment is available to all county residents regardless of their ability to pay. Sliding scale fee schedules are available and are adjusted for income. Available services can include assessment and referral through medical and social detoxification, outpatient counselling, day treatment, and residential care.

The county also contracts the University of Utah to perform assessments and to run free interim group sessions for people waiting for a place in treatment.  The contact details are listed in the Resources section below.

You can also browse alcohol rehab programs by state in our rehab directory. FindTreatment.gov and the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline are also listed under Resources.

AA in Salt Lake City: Common Questions

How much do AA meetings in Salt Lake City cost?

There is no cost for attending AA meetings in Salt Lake City. AA groups are self-supporting through voluntary contributions. A basket may be passed around, but no one is expected to give, especially someone coming to a meeting for the first time.

Do I have to call myself an alcoholic to attend?

You do not have to call yourself an alcoholic to attend a meeting. AA states that the only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking, and you do not even need that to sit in on an open meeting. Plenty of people attend for a while before they decide what their drinking means to them.

What is the difference between open and closed meetings in Salt Lake City?

Open meetings welcome anyone, including friends and family. Closed meetings are limited to people who want to stop drinking. Salt Lake City runs about eight to one in favour of open meetings, one of the widest margins in our directory, so nearly everything above is open to a first-time visitor.

Why do some Salt Lake City meetings show as temporarily closed?

Groups sometimes pause, change venue, or move online, and around 14 local groups are currently marked that way in our listings. That is a higher share than most cities, so it is worth confirming a meeting is running before you set out.

Are there Spanish-language AA meetings in Salt Lake City?

Yes, several Spanish-speaking groups appear in our Salt Lake City listings. You can use the language filter to see current days and times. A small number of local groups also meet in other languages, and the central office can tell you which and when.

Can I join an AA meeting online from Salt Lake City?

Yes, and it is a substantial part of the local picture. Around 23 online AA groups appear in our Salt Lake City listings, running roughly 63 sessions a week, which helps in winter or when getting across the valley is difficult.
