Montgomery, West Virginia AA Meetings
Montgomery is a city in Fayette County, West Virginia. If you are a resident of Fayette County struggling with alcohol addiction, you may be interested in our online directory of AA meetings in Montgomery. West Virginia Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) evolved from AA’s rich history in Akron, Ohio, starting in the 1930s. The program’s origins began with the spiritual principles of the Oxford Group, a Christian-based self-help group. At the beginning of his recovery journey, founder Bill Wilson failed to help others get sober. Then the12-Steps were written as a non-religious spiritual set of guidelines for daily living. Wilson’s philosophy on quitting drinking began what is now considered the disease concept of alcoholism, in which alcohol addiction is a disease of the mind, emotions, and physical body. The alcoholic members involved in the Oxford Group eventually gravitated toward Bill Wilson. By the late 1930s, Wilson’s group (including co-founder Dr. Robert Smith, commonly referred to as “Dr. Bob”) separated from the Oxford Group and started AA. Incorporating the spiritual principles of the 12-Steps, with the concept of holding informal meetings and AA sponsorship, has helped AA become recognized today as an effective addiction recovery program that has helped millions of people around the globe.
