Oak Hill, West Virginia AA Meetings

The West Virginia Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) program evolved from a vibrant history. AA began in 1935 when the co-founder of the AA program, Dr. Robert Smith (“Dr. Bob”), struggled with many unsuccessful attempts to get sober. AA founder Bill Wilson (“Bill W.”) also suffered from failed attempts to abstain from drinking alcohol. After integrating various schools of thought (such as the Oxford Groups’ spiritual principles and a medical doctor, Dr. Silkworth’s philosophy on alcoholism), Bill W. finally got sober. When Bill W. met with Dr. Bob, he emphasized that alcoholism was not a sign of personal weakness (as it was commonly considered) but a disease of the mind, emotions, and physical body. Bill W. incorporated the disease concept to see things in a new light (a spiritual awakening). Bill W’s impact on Dr. Bob’s ability to quit drinking was immediate. As Dr. Bob responded to Bill’s innovative perspective, the doctor could finally abstain from alcohol and maintain long-term sobriety. Dr. Bob’s sobriety was the impetus that sparked the beginning of Alcoholics Anonymous. June 10 of 1935, the day Dr. Bob stopped drinking, became the official worldwide anniversary date, of AA.
