Santa Clara, California AA Meetings
The ninth-most populous city in the San Francisco Bay Area, Santa Clara has put in place AA Santa Clara meetings to help residents of its sizeable population manage its alcohol use disorder. Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a brain disease where people struggle to stop or manage drinking despite the significant damage it causes. An individual is diagnosed with alcohol use disorder (AUD) if they meet two or more of 11 criteria in a 12-month period according to the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Based on how many of the criteria apply to an individual, AUD may be mild, moderate, or severe. Different things can cause AUD in different people including regular binge drinking, coping with emotional problems, peer pressure, family history of alcohol issues, low self-esteem, bariatric surgery, physical and sexual abuse, easy access to alcohol, drinking at an early age. Millions of adults in the United States are diagnosed with AUD. AUD also negatively affects people close to the drinker such as spouses, family members, co-workers, business partners. For men who get their girlfriends or wives pregnant, they can be at risk of developing fetal alcohol syndrome and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
