Idaho is home to some of the most stunning landscapes, thriving cities, and idyllic small towns in America. And, when compared with the national average, Idaho fares better than most other US states in regard to alcohol dependency and rates of excess drinking. Not all the news, however, is so positive. The data indicate that rates of binge drinking in Idaho significantly exceed the national average among our most vulnerable populations: youth and seniors. Fortunately, if you or someone you love is experiencing an alcohol use disorder (AUD), there is hope. AA meetings in Idaho provide confidential, no cost recovery support and education to persons of any age, gender identity, sexual orientation, ethnicity, or creed.

On average, the cost of rehab in Idaho is lower than in any other US state, totally roughly $43,000 per person. But despite the relative “affordability” of treatment in Idaho when compared with other states, the costs continue to remain prohibitively high. The state’s average annual per person income, for example, is just over $54,000, meaning that the costs of care for someone experiencing addiction could nearly consume the client’s entire earnings for one year.

Popular Types of AA Meetings in Idaho

Despite these startling statistics, hope and help for persons experiencing alcohol dependency are abundant. AA provides support, education, and resources for those seeking to regain the healthy, happy, alcohol-free life they and their loved ones deserve. But not all AA programs are the same. Rather, a wide array of meeting types is available to address the evolving recovery needs and goals of its members. Some of the most popular types of AA meetings in Idaho are described below:

  • Discussion: Discussion meetings enable AA members to share their experiences, discuss the challenges and the setbacks they have faced, and set goals for the days, weeks, and months to come. These meetings are peer-led and designed to offer members both support and actionable advice from others in recovery.
  • 12 Step: AA is based on the stages of change model of recovery, predicated on the belief that healing from addiction is a lifelong process. The 12 Steps of recovery in AA define the process through which members pursue their holistic recovery and physical, psychological, emotional, social, and spiritual wellbeing. 12 Step meetings provide an opportunity for members to analyze, discuss, and apply one step per week, reflecting on their progress and formulating strategies for continuing growth in recovery by “working” the steps.
  • Open/Closed: All AA meetings are free, peer-directed, and anonymous. Most are also open to the public, meaning that anyone with an interest in addiction recovery may attend. Closed meetings, however, are designed exclusively for persons who are experiencing an alcohol dependency and are interested in pursuing recovery.

Online AA Meetings in Idaho

While face-to-face group meetings have long been the trademark of the AA model of recovery, AA programs can also be quite high-tech, offering members access to a seemingly endless array of services and resources right from the comfort of their home. Online AA meetings in Idaho can be particularly beneficial for those who live in rural areas or who may be unable to travel to a traditional meeting site.

Online AA resources include educational videos, livestream lectures and events, and online meetings available anytime and anywhere a member might need support. This includes access to specialized AA groups, such as gender-specific groups and meetings for veterans, members of the LGBTQ+ community, persons with co-occurring disorders, and speakers of languages other than English.
