Alcoholics Anonymous, or AA, has become the gold standard for group support worldwide. A primary factor is its long history of success at helping people achieve lasting soberness. AA got its start in 1935 in Akron, Ohio, between business owner Bill Wilson and Doctor Bob Smith. Both “Bill W” and “Dr. Bob,” as they are now called in AA, had alcohol use disorder. Smith was motivated to stop using alcohol after meeting Wilson, who overcame stopped using alcohol through his affiliation with a Christian movement. Both men were determined to figure out a way to help other people become sober again. They founded AA and soon after published The Big Book.
