Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is a fellowship of people dedicated to helping each other overcome alcoholism by maintaining long-term sobriety. As part of AA’s 12 Step program, members share their experience, strength, and hope with others. No dues, fees, or other costs are required for joining AA Massachusetts groups, such as those in Swansea. To become a member, the only requirement is the desire to stop drinking (and using other addictive substances). Alcoholics Anonymous is based on its 12 Steps, which are the fundamentals of the program. The 12 Steps are considered a spiritual set of principles. The word spiritual is not the same as religious; although the AA literature mentions a “Higher Power (HP)” and “God,” AA members are not required to have a religious belief. In fact, many AA members consider themselves agnostics or atheists. Alcoholics Anonymous is a self-supporting organization supported by donations from its members.
