It doesn’t matter where in the recovery process you are (whether you are a newcomer, an old-timer or somewhere in between); traveling can present significant triggers. Many airlines and resorts offer complimentary drinks; you may even be unknowingly given a glass of champagne as you board. Combined with the daily stresses of travel, anyone in addiction recovery can begin to have cravings to drink. Travel can be stressful, even for seasoned AA members, known as “old-timers.” It is not uncommon for old-timers to experience uneasy feelings when attending meetings away from their home group. You may be surprised at how easy it is to maintain your addiction recovery program while on holiday. You can attend AA meetings across the country and around the world, even on cruise ships. Some people feel hesitant to participate in the meetings outside their home group. Nonetheless, you will probably find that distant members of AA groups will welcome you as soon as you overcome your initial hesitation.
